Swift Networks rolls out commercial phone services

Malaysian telco exits Africa
Asian-based telecommunication company, Telekom Malaysia Berhad, is set to focus its investment strategy on geographic regions closer to home, according to its chief executive officer, Yusof Annuar Yaacob.
This strategy comes after the telecommunications company sold its entire 60% stake in Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) last month, for $16 million, to mobile telecom operator Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL). more...
Interswitch Implements ATM in Sierra Leone

Interswitch has announced the successful completion of its ATM driving solutions for Sierra Leone Commercial Bank to drive growth in the electronic payments arena in Sierra Leone and also reduce the cost of retail transactions.

InterSwitch solution controls and drives ATMs (including states and screens) directly; perform centralized routing, security processing, reconciliation and proactive monitoring functions. Nigerian telcos ready for 3G
Nigerian mobile telecoms operators, Globacom and MTN, are making progress towards rolling out and upgrading their respective network capabilities, to provide 3G services in the West African country.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), for a fee of $150 million each, awarded the operators 3G licences last month, according to the NCC Web site. Aside from Globacom and MTN, Alheri Engineering and Celtel Nigeria were also successful recipients of 3G operating licences. more...
MTN Network Makes Its First 3G Technology Call
Nigeria’s leading Telecommunications Company, MTN Nigeria Communications Limited has made a successful “voice and video” test call on its 3G UMTS technology platform. Chief Technical Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola explained that the company has begun call testing of its 3G network between Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt.
According to him, “we are working assiduously to complete the ring of Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt in the next few months so that customers on our network would begin to enjoy the multi-purpose benefits associated with 3G calls.” more...
Globacom leads Africa, Middle East mobile market

Globacom has confirmed its rating as the fastest growing telecommunication company in Middle East and Africa (MEA), amassing an unprecedented 5.8 million subscribers in 2006.

The closest to Globacom in terms of new subscriber acquisition was TCI of Iran, which added 5.66 million new customers. MTN Nigeria came third, which had 3.9 million new subscribers. Saudi Arabia’s Ettihad Etisalat (Mobily) finished fourth with 3.67 million additions while Orascom of Egypt, which was second in September, fell back to fifth place with 3.42 million, ahead of Vodacom of South Africa that added 3.40 million customers. more...

 
Mtel begins Revitalization process

The mobile arm of Nigeria Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) Mtel has begun the process of revitalization of the network to position it to compete with other mobile operators in the country.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Mtel, Mr. Ladi Williams, said the company has awarded Network expansion and restoration contract to quartets of Ericsson, Motorola, ZTE and Huawei at the cost N55.3 billion. The expansion project will cost N48.318 billion while the restoration project will cost N7 billion. more...
