Intel Reinforces Commitment To Nigeria

As part of the Intel World Ahead Program, Intel has further reinforced the company's commitment to Nigeria and Africa during an address to the media by Devan Naidoo, General Manager for Intel Africa.

Naidoo focused on the need for technology to enhance accessibility and mobility, in addition to stressing the importance of WiMAX development and implementation across Nigeria to aid the education system.|

He additionally discussed the latest product offering from Intel; Intel® Centrino® 2 Processor, powered by Intel Core™2 Duo processors. Centrino® technology focuses on providing increased performance standards and connectivity which is vital for Nigeria.|

He also touched upon Intel's expansion plans and highlighted 2008 as a landmark year for the company as it celebrates its 40th birthday. This visit follows on the heels of a Nigeria tour conducted by Craig Barrett, chairman of Intel, in 2007.

“We at Intel believe in taking a holistic approach and are working with governments, telecom regulators, NGOs and market players to further develop the ICT landscape in Africa.

Our aim in Nigeria is to help enhance the lives and opportunities of Nigerians who live in rural areas by delivering access to computers, the Internet and providing them with the tools by which to further their education and access to the global online community,” stated Naidoo.

Nigeria has started laying the foundations for broadband solutions including the implementation of WiMAX technology, a standard that enables the delivery of wireless broadband services anytime, anywhere. The deployment of WiMAX is an important means of connecting people and enhancing access to education in developing markets with particular regard to those that have a high rural population such as Nigeria. Furthermore, Intel's chairman has predicted WiMAX to connect over one billion people by 2012. Earlier in the year, Intel expanded its education offering in Nigeria through the Intel World
Ahead Program (IWAP) by supporting the deployment of Intel-powered classmate PCs for 200 schools under the Education Trust Fund (ETF) and the Universal Service Provident Fund (USPF) scale out of the One- to- One learning program to 200 schools across the country.

Intel also aims to reach 16,000 teachers in Abuja in the next few months, as part of the Intel® Teach Program, which has already trained 15,000 teachers in other African cities. To date, the Intel® Teach Program has trained over 20,000 teachers in Nigeria and aims to reach 150,000 teachers by 2012.

Intel is also pleased to note that the private sector schools are adopting this 21st century teaching and learning method thereby helping to shape an enhanced education system for future generations.

“The knowledge economy is a reality and all countries, both developed and emerging, have recognized the long-term importance of innovation and the creation of critical thinkers within their youth,” concluded Naidoo.

Intel celebrated its 40th anniversary since inception in July 2008, by looking 40 years in the past and 40 years in the future. The celebration was marked by the unveiling of the World Mural Project, a digital artwork that captures the vision of young people on how computers will transform the world in the next 40 years, which includes contributions from the Intel Computer Clubhouse in South Africa.

Since 2007, Intel has met with Nigerian government officials and started working on a comprehensive set of digital inclusion projects aimed at improving education, healthcare and the economic development of Nigeria's 140 million citizens. Some of these projects are in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Health.

One of them will bring critical pediatric care to a rural hospital serving a region of 4.5 million people, and another agreement with the Federal Ministry of Education aims at broadening several successful education initiatives, including training 150,000 teachers and donating 3,000 computers to schools through the Intel® Teach Program.

APC Launches TradeOff Tools

Global leader in integrated critical power and cooling services, APC by Schneider Electric has announced the debut of APC TradeOff Tools, new Web-based applications with easy-to-use interfaces designed for use in the early stages of data centre concept and design development.

By enabling data centre professionals to experiment with various scenarios regarding virtualization, efficiency, power sizing, capital costs, and other key design issues, APC TradeOff Tools break down major data centre planning decisions into a series of smaller, more manageable decisions. Use of these tools helps validate, through modelling, the overall design of a data centre.

“Customers need to make many key decisions during any data centre project, and they do not always have the necessary information to guide them,” says Carl Cottuli, vice president of APC's Data Center Science Center.

“Many of their concerns are not addressed by configuration tools because they occur early in the concept selection process.

With the introduction of APC's TradeOff Tools, when a roadblock arises, the data centre decision maker can easily find a tool to deal with their specific issue, get a quick answer, and continue on in the concept selection process.”

APC's Data Center Science Center (DCSC) designed the APC TradeOff Tools. The DCSC team of engineers and analysts researches data centre issues and helps develop design and learning tools that assist data centre professionals in managing their data centres.
